Seit einer Woche ist nun mein neues Schnittmuster What the fob?! erhältlich. Es ist ein wunderbare schnelles Projekt, die meisten Designs lassen sich in unter 1 Stunde nähen. Alle Designs werden mit der Foundation Paper Piecing Methode (FPP) gefertigt. Du hast noch nie FPP genäht? Keine Sorge! Das Schnittmuster enthält eine bebilderte Anleitung und ist somit für Anfänger geeignet. Ihr könnt damit eure liebsten Stoffreste aufbrauchen oder aber natürlich auch auf Meterware aus dem Stofffundus zurück greifen. Vielleicht hast du auch Jelly Rolls zuhause? Sie lassen sich für die Schlüsselanhänger wunderbar nutzen!
My brand new pattern What the fob?! is finally in the shop! It's a super fast and fun project, most designs can be sewn in under 1 hour. It includes detailed instructions for making 6 different key fob designs. All designs are sewn using the Foundation Paper Piecing method (FPP). You are new to FPP? Don't worry! The pattern includes illustrated instructions and is therefore suitable for beginners.You can use up your favorite fabric scraps, or some yardage from your fabric stash. Maybe you have some jelly rolls at home? They work perfectly for the FPP designs!
Schlüsselanhänger sind schon seit Jahren eins meiner allerliebsten genähten Mitbringsel. Die Idee, sie mit einem FPP Design zu kombinieren, ist mir schon letztes Jahr gekommen. Die Umsetzung hat überraschend lange gedauert! Ich habe viele Designs ausprobiert und lange getüfteln, bis auch alles ganz genau passt. Und dann ist mir kurz vor der Zielgerade aufgefallen, dass nicht alle Rohlinge immer zuverlässig gleich breit sind! Also nochmal 2 Schritte zurück und wieder ausprobieren, bis auch dieses Problem gelöst ist. Meine Notizen dazu findet ihr im Schnittmuster.
Key fobs have been one of my very favorite selfmade gifts for years. Combine them with a FPP design was an idea born last year. Turning it into an actual pattern has taken a surprisingly long time! I tried many designs and fiddled with them for a long time - I really wanted everything to fit together perfectly! Then, on the home stretch, I noticed that not all hardware sold as 3cm/1 1/4'' width reliably come with the same width! Some more trial an error ensured that this problem was also solved. You can find my notes on this issue in the pattern.
In einem Live auf Instagram habe ich ein paar weitere Tips zum Schnittmuster mit euch geteilt und häufige Fragen beantwortet. Falls ihr es verpasst habt, hier ist eine Zusammenfassung.
Frage: Ich habe nur 25mm/1'' Rohling zuhause - kann ich damit das Schnittmuster nähen?
Antwort: Ich habe von euch das Feedback bekommen: Ja! Das geht! Nutze hierzu einen Skalierungsfaktor von 80%. Leider habe ich es noch nicht selbst ausprobiert und kann euch nicht die geänderten Maße für die Bügeleinlage nennen. Das reiche ich hier nach sobald ich es getestet habe!
In an Instagram Live, I shared a few more tips about the pattern and answered common questions. As it was in German, here's a recap.
Question: I only have 25mm/1'' key fob hardware at home - can I sew the pattern with those?
Answer: Yes! I got feedback from you guys and you told me it works with a scaling factor of 80%. Unfortunately, I have not yet tried it myself and can not tell you the modified dimensions for the iron-on interfacing. I'll add those to this post as soon as I have tested it!
Frage: Kann ich die Schlüsselanhänger auch so verlängern, dass ich sie um den Hals tragen kann?
Antwort: Jein. Theoretisch kannst du mehrere Vorlagen ausdrucken und so aneinander kleben, dass das Muster fortgesetzt wird. Damit kannst du dann einen langen Schlüsselanhänger nähen. Ich empfehle aber, diese Schlüsselanhänger nicht für einen schweren Schlüsselbund zu nutzen. Ich befürchte, dass sie durch den dauerhaften Zug auf den Rohling nicht allzu lange halten könnten...
Question: Can I extend the key fobs, so that I can wear them around my neck?
Answer: Maybe? Theoretically, you can print out several templates, glue them together and extend the pattern. You can then use this long template to sew a long key fob. However, I don't recommend using a long key fob manufactured in this way for a heavy bunch of keys. I fear that they might not last too long due to the constant pull on the key fob hardware connection....
Meine weiteren Tips:
Du hast nur wenige Minütchen Zeit oder möchtest deinen Lieblingsstoff nicht in kleine Stücke zerschnieden? Dann überspringe doch den FPP-Schritt und fertige deinen Schlüsselanhänger aus nur einem Stoff. Dazu kannst du dir die Außenmaße der FPP Vorlagen ausmessen und deinen Stoff genauso groß zuschneiden. Nimmst du nur einen Stoff, dann solltest du die Bügeleinlage aber genauso groß zuschneiden, wie deinen Stoff. Anschließend wird sie dann großflächig auf die komplette Stoffrückseite aufgebügelt. So hat dein Schlüsselanhänger hinterher auch den nötigen Stand.
Diese superschnelle Variante eignet sich auch wunderbar, um kleine Reste von Bügeleinlagen zu verwerten! Du kannst schmale Streifen oder Rechtecke so auf die Rückseite puzzeln, dass sich die Stückchen um ein paar Millimeter überlappen, bis dann die gesamte Rückseite bedeckt ist. Das klappt super und spart dazu noch den ein oder anderen Euro.
Some more tips:
You only have a few minutes or you don't want to cut your favorite fabric into small pieces? Then skip the FPP step and make your key fob using only one fabric! To do this, you need to measure the outer dimensions of the FPP templates and cut your fabric to the same size. If you use only one fabric, you should also cut the iron-on interfacing the same size as your fabric. Then press it onto the entire back of the fabric. This way, your key fob will have stability and hold its shape.
This super-fast version is also great for using up small scraps of iron-on interfacing! You can puzzle narrow strips or rectangles on the back so that the pieces overlap by a few millimeters until the entire back is covered. It works really well! And you end up producing less waste and saving a little money.
Zum Schluss noch ein Tip zur Verwendung verschiedener Stoffstärken. Wer schon eine Weile mit Patchworkstoffen näht der weiß, dass die Schwere der Stoffe von Hersteller zu Hersteller variiert. Außerdem mögt ihr vielleicht sogar sehr dünne Stoffe einsetzen wie die sehr leichten Voile-Stoffe von Liberty. Meine grundsätzliche Empfehlung hier ist:
Bei schweren Stoffen (bspw. Kona Cottons) haltet euch einfach an die Angaben im Schnittmuster!
Bei eher (sehr) leichten Stoffen (Art Gallery, Liberty), insbesondere in Kombination mit den Designs die nur wenige FPP-Felder enthalten, kannst du dir überlegen ob du die gesamte Rückseite der FPP-Vorlage mit einer Einlage bebügelst. So erhält dein Schüsselanhänger mehr Stand. Stört dich die weichere Haptik aber nicht, dann bleibe einfach bei den Angaben im Schnittmuster.
Finally, a tip regarding the weight of different fabrics and how to take this into account. If you've been sewing with patchwork fabrics for a while, you know that the weight of fabrics varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Also, you may even like to use very thin fabrics like Liberty's very light voile fabrics. My recommendation here is:
For heavy fabrics (e.g. Kona Cottons) definitely follow the instructions in the pattern!
For rather/very light fabrics (Art Gallery, Liberty), especially in combination with the designs that contain only few FPP pieces, you might consider using iron-on interfacing over the entire back of the FPP template. This will lead to a stiffer key fob which holds its shape better. However, if you don't mind the softer feel, then just stick with the instructions in the pattern.
