my name is Sonja, you can find me on instagram @nopadesign. Today I get to share my process of sewing a christmassy pillow using Steffis' FPP templates Mistletoe.
Ich nähe und quilte seit ca. sechs Jahren und liebe scrappy Quilts. Im letzten Jahr war ich zum ersten Mal Patterntesterin für Steffi und habe einen scrappy rosa-grauen Knittedquilt genäht. Als sie jetzt Tester für die FPP Blöcke gesucht hat war ich gerne dabei. Einige FPP Blöcke hatte ich bereits genäht, ich würde mich nicht als Anfängerin bezeichnen, bin aber weit weg vom Profi. Hier beschreibe ich, wie ich an das Thema herangegangen bin, warum ich was und wie genäht habe.
I have been sewing and quilting for about six years and I love scrappy quilts. Last year I was a pattern tester for Steffi for the first time and I sewed a scrappy pink-grey Knitted Quilt which was fun! So when she was looking for testers this time around I was happy to participate again. I have already sewn FPP blocks in the past, so I would not call myself a beginner. I am far away from being a pro though! Here I describe how I developed an idea on how to use the Mistletoe blocks and then approached it.
Nachdem ich die Pattern erhalten habe dachte ich sofort an ein weihnachtliches Dorf (Häuser, Weihnachtsbaum, Wald und den Weihnachtsstern) auf einem Kissen. Ich habe noch einen Berg Weihnachtsstoffe mit schönen Motiven, die sollten das Dorf ergänzen (fussy cutting). Da diese Stoffe alle aus verschiedenen creme Tönen bestehen habe ich mich für einen scrappy creme Hintergrund entschieden. Bei einem einheitlichen Hintergrund wären die Motivstoffe zu sehr aufgefallen.
After I received the patterns I immediately thought of a Christmas village (houses, Christmas tree, forest and a star) on a pillow. I still have a mountain of Christmas fabrics with beautiful motifs, which can complement the village (fussy cutting). Since these fabrics are all different shades of cream I decided to use a scrappy cream background. With a solid background, the other fabrics would have stood out too much.
Nach der kurzen Planung fängt dann der Spaß an. Stoffe mit passenden Motiven suchen, Tiere sind ja nicht nur auf Weihnachtsstoffen. Das Chaos im Nähzimmer ist perfekt. Ich wühle mich dann wirklich durch alle Kisten, denn mit den Stoffen kommen dann auch Ideen. Ich wusste z.B. gar nicht mehr, dass ich noch einen Rest vom grün bunt gepunkteten Stoff hatte. Aber als ich den in der Hand hatte war klar, das sind Kugeln am Weihnachtsbaum. Und darunter gehören Geschenke.
After this short planning session the fun begins. Finding fabrics with matching motifs was a good start, animals can not only be found on Christmas fabrics! The sewing room quickly turns into chaos. I really rummage through every single box, because each fabric find leads to a new idea. I didn't know I still had a remnant of the green polka-dotted fabric! As soon as I have it in my hand, it's clear that these are baubles on the Christmas tree. Of course, under the tree there need to be gifts!
Als Hilfe bei der Motivsuche kopiere ich das Pattern noch einmal, schneide z.B. die Haustüre aus und suche damit einen Ausschnitt in passender Größe. Fertige Blöcke kommen an die Designwand, wo ich sie ohne Probleme hin und her schieben kann. Durch die Motivstoffe bleibt man nicht im 5 inch Blockraster, sondern muss mit Stoffen ergänzen.
To help find the motif, I make a copy of the pattern and cut out the section for which I try to find a motif. Finished blocks go straight onto the design wall, where I can easily play with the arrangement. Because my motif fabrics do not fit into the 5 inch block grid, I have to add fabric pieces.
Auf dem Foto sieht man gut, dass ich die mittleren Baumblöcke nach oben und unter vergrößert habe, da der Hirsch keine 5 inch, wie die Blöcke, hoch ist. Das mache ich ohne vorher groß zu messen, was zu viel ist wird hinterher abgeschnitten. Auch den Schlitten habe ich so vergrößert und dann auf Blockgröße zugeschnitten.
In the photo you can see, that I have enlarged the middle column of tree blocks at the top and bottom, because the stag is not 5 inches high and the column would otherwise not be long enough. I do this without measuring beforehand, I just add a generous piece of fabric, then cut the rest off afterwards. I also enlarged the sled in the same manner, then cut it to block size.
Ich habe nicht groß geplant, sondern einfach vergrößert und so lange verschoben bis die Anordnung gefällt. Dieses freie Nähen ohne genaue Angaben fällt mir und vielen anderen schwer, da man sonst auf jedes ¼ inch achtet. Aber es macht Spaß sich davon zu lösen und funktioniert mit jedem Versuch besser. Und es gibt keine Nähte die treffen müssen.
I have not planned much during this process, but simply enlarged blocks and moved things around until I was happy. This way of sewing without exact rules and measurements is difficult for me and many others! Usually we pay attention to every ¼ inch. But it's fun to break away from it and easier with each attempt.
Um Kissen mache ich gerne noch einen Rand, damit die Motive nicht in den Seiten verschwinden und gut zu erkennen sind. Den Rand oben auf dem Foto habe ich noch mit einer zweiten Runde vergrößert. Damit komme ich auf ungefähr 50 cm, eine schöne Kissengröße.
As a frame for pillows I like to add a border, so that the motifs do not disappear into the sides take center stage. The edge at the top of the photo I enlarged with a second round. This brings me to about 50 cm/20'', a nice pillow size.
Zusammen mir dem Weihnachtskugelkissen - genäht mit dem FPP Set Cedar - ist die Adventsdeko auf dem Sofa perfekt. Ich hoffe ich konnte Euch anregen mit den Pattern frei zu spielen. Sie sind auch hervorragend für Geschenke geeignet. Kissen, Tischläufer, ein Wandbehang oder weihnachtliche Quilts - alles ist möglich!
